In The Black, Tales from the Edge #1 by Sheryl Nantus Vaginal Fantasy book club main read for August

In The Black, Tales from the Edge book one, written by Sheryl Nantus was published in 2014 and is Vaginal Fantasy book clubs main read for the month of August.

When Sam Keller left the military, she wanted to create as much distance between her and her past as she could. Aiming for a calmer life she now captains the Bonnie Belle, a spaceship full of courtesans who bring companionship to the local colonies. When one of her girls ends up dead, Sam feels responsible for finding out who killed her. Marshal Daniel LeClair is tough and stead fast in his decisions. But when his vacation gets replaced by an assignment to help find who killed a courtesan on the Bonnie Belle, he can’t help weakening when it comes to Sam. Together the two race the Guild’s clock to find the murderer. When the killer threatens the Belle again the stakes are raised and both are determined to save the crew, and bring the murderer to justice, no matter what it takes.

In The Black is a sci-fi/murder mystery/romance story mash-up that is a simple and fun read. It is refreshing to be able to say that there is nothing I disliked about this book. It was nice average length of 244 pages that kept me entertained the whole time. I loved that Sam was a strong female lead that was not afraid to admit when something was difficult. I also loved that Daniel walked the line between knowing Sam was a competent woman and needing to keep her as safe as he could. It is always nice to have a book where the female lead is not a damsel in distress and male lead agrees. The courtesans had their own flaws in a realistic way but banned together for their captain and ship when it as necessary, which is also marginally uncommon of the main character set in stories. The story was not just about one bad guy either, three in fact, which is also a nice change in pace.

As you can see, I have nothing bad to say about this book and I would definitely recommend it to anyone who enjoys sci-fi, mystery, romance, or easy yet good reads. I look forward to reading the rest of the Tales from the Edge books.

Now go forth, read good multi genre books, and prosper.
